Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that usually appears during the growth years, most often between the ages of 10 and 15. It isn’t simply a matter of poor posture. It’s a structural change that can affect balance, movement, and even confidence, if not detected early.

While scoliosis can occur in both boys and girls, it’s two to three times more common in girls, and girls are more likely to have curves that progress enough to need treatment. What makes detection trickier is that poor posture from long hours of sitting or carrying heavy school bags can cause back strain or make spinal asymmetry appear more pronounced. This creates confusion about whether it’s a postural issue or scoliosis.

Why Early Detection Matters

Catching scoliosis early truly makes a difference. When recognised in its mild stages – often with curves under 25 degrees – postural guidance, strengthening, and physiotherapy can help prevent progression. However, if the curve worsens beyond 25-40 degrees, bracing may be required, and severe cases (over 40 degrees) could need surgical correction.

The Scoliosis Research Society and the American Academy of Paediatrics recommend screenings for girls at ages 10 and 12, and for boys at 13 or 14, since these curves typically develop in early adolescence. Unfortunately, routine spinal screenings in schools are rare, which means many mild cases remain unnoticed until symptoms become prominent or visible asymmetry appear.

How Chiropractors Can Help

Chiropractors are trained to assess spinal alignment and movement. During a scoliosis screening, they may look for uneven shoulders, rib prominence, or hip alignment issues, and often use the Adam’s Forward Bend Test to detect structural curves. If any concerns are found, X-rays can confirm the angle of curvature and help guide the next steps. Chiropractors can also provide exercise-based corrections, ergonomic advice, and referrals for specialist evaluation when necessary.
